The southbound truck tunnel on Interstate 5 reopened Thursday, a month after a fiery crash killed three people and temporarily shut down the West Coast’s main commercial route.
The tunnel reopened 15 days earlier than expected, said Officer Patrick Kimball of the California Highway Patrol. Authorities initially warned that repair work could take months.
The contractor, Security Paving of Oxnard, will earn a $2.9 million bonus for completing the repairs in less than 33 days, Caltrans officials said. The work included replacement of slabs, concrete barriers and a metal guardrail.
Authorities determined that 31 vehicles — including big rigs and one passenger vehicle — were involved in the crash.

Police say a Hyannis man’s plan to make off with a shopper’s purse outside Christmas Tree Shops yesterday ran out of gas — literally.
Police said they arrested Wilson Perry III, 19, last evening on a charge of unarmed robbery after the red pickup he was in ran out of gas at Main Street and Yarmouth Road.
Perry is alleged to be the man who at around 6:15 p.m. grabbed a woman’s purse from her shoulder as she and her friend popped the trunk of their car in the parking lot of the shop on Route 132. Although the victim chased the man to the Bed, Bath & Beyond store next door, he got away in a red pickup, the police said.
Within about 15 minutes of the purse snatching, a report of a disabled red pickup drew police to Main Street and Yarmouth Road where they allegedly spotted the stolen purse in the front seat. Also inside was the driver of the pickup Nikita Demello-Eddy, 20, of Hyannis who told police that Perry walked up the street to get gas.

The Reno City Council will hold a public hearing on whether restrictions should be placed on where truck stops can be located. A truck stop has been proposed to be built at I-80 and Robb Drive. The hearing has been set for 6 p.m. at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center Wednesday.
“This is a residential area and it would be nice to keep it a residential area,” Gina Battle, who lives near Robb Drive, said.
The city says the Flying J truck stop will be close to the interchange, allowing truckers quick on and off access. But some say additional trucks, means additional traffic.
“It would bring more of the traffic off of the freeway and into the neighborhoods so to say and we don’t really need that,” Battle said.
According to a city staff report, studies of traffic and noise would have to be conducted. But some say the location is too close to homes, and isn’t right for the neighborhood.

Four men hijacked a UPS delivery truck at gunpoint on Cleveland’s east side today, taking off with the truck and damaging packages before police found the truck a few hours later.
Police have one adult and two juveniles in custody but are still sorting out what, if anything, was stolen or destroyed and how involved the suspects were. Names are not yet available.
Lt. Thomas Stacho said a driver for the delivery service had just completed a delivery on E. 101st Street neat St. Clair Avenue about 10 a.m. when he was approached by four males, two carrying handguns and three wearing masks.
The robbers took personal items from the driver as well as keys to the truck before driving away in it, Stacho said.
Police received a call about 1 p.m. that the truck was in the parking lot of an abandoned apartment complex at E. 101st Street and Folk Avenue.
“The contents were strewn about, packages ripped open.

The Idaho Falls Fire Department says it hates to see it go, but is donating its first elevating ladder truck, which the department bought in 1963. The truck is being given to the Jefferson County Fire District as part of a grant agreement.
Idaho Falls received money for a new truck after the department agreed to donate the old one. The 85-foot elevating platform truck is still in great shape, with only 13,000 miles. The Central Fire District says with the growth of Jefferson County, it will be a great addition to their fleet.
Fire Chief Jim Deuel, Jefferson County Central Fire District: “Although we don’t have high-rise, we have buildings that cover alot of square footage, so if you have fires in center of those buildings, and you made roof access to get to inside, it’d give us ability to do that on structures it wasn’t safe to put people in.”

A truck leaking ethanolamine along Interstate 94 led to the evacuation of the Coloma rest area, Michigan State Police said.
The tanker truck was reported as leaking Tuesday and found an hour later at the rest area.
Police called for the Berrien County hazardous materials team to assist with the leak, but were unsure how much of the nearly 45,000 pounds of the chemical had spilled.
Ethanolamine, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration, causes irritation to eyes, lungs and skin. The substance, used in a wide range of industries from agriculture to dry cleaning and cosmetics, also is flammable.
No injuries were reported in the incident. MSP continues its investigation.

Forty-six years ago, Shirl Mauldin was hoodwinked into starting a newspaper for the residents of Eagle River.
Mauldin said she was a reluctant editor, since she’d had no prior journalism experience, and Chugiak already had a newspaper that covered both communities. After some urging and cajoling from a local homesteader, Mauldin launched the Eagle, which she said became “a labor of love and a labor of fun.”
The weekly paper combined news, public service announcements, human interest stories and good-natured gossip. Each edition featured a large section called the “Eagles Nest”, which detailed residents’ visits from family, vacations, hospitalizations and other personal news that people reported to Mauldin. “It was a paper about your neighbors, not really about hard news.
