Alleged getaway truck runs out of gas
Police say a Hyannis man’s plan to make off with a shopper’s purse outside Christmas Tree Shops yesterday ran out of gas — literally.
Police said they arrested Wilson Perry III, 19, last evening on a charge of unarmed robbery after the red pickup he was in ran out of gas at Main Street and Yarmouth Road.
Perry is alleged to be the man who at around 6:15 p.m. grabbed a woman’s purse from her shoulder as she and her friend popped the trunk of their car in the parking lot of the shop on Route 132. Although the victim chased the man to the Bed, Bath & Beyond store next door, he got away in a red pickup, the police said.
Within about 15 minutes of the purse snatching, a report of a disabled red pickup drew police to Main Street and Yarmouth Road where they allegedly spotted the stolen purse in the front seat. Also inside was the driver of the pickup Nikita Demello-Eddy, 20, of Hyannis who told police that Perry walked up the street to get gas.
