There was no ‘eureka’ moment, but rather a gradual evolution of automobile milestones. But, the car as we know it, propelled by an internal combustion petrol engine, was first successfully road-tested and patented by Karl Freidrich Benz in Germany in 1886. The three-wheel vehicle was propelled by a four-cycle internal combustion engine and in the same year another famous name associated with motoring and fellow German, Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler, along with his partner Wilhelm Maybach also produced an automobile but complete with the world’s first four-stroke engine. The first Briton to build a motor car was a plumber and gas fitter by the name of Fred Bremer, who at the tender age of 20 in 1892 started construction of his four-wheeled, petrol driven car, which he first drove on the open road two years later.But it was brothers Frank and Charles Duryea, who became the first American car manufacturers in 1893 and indeed it was also in the USA that mass production became the standard for car manufacture. In 1901 Ransome Eli Olds introduced the basic assembly line in Detroit and became the largest manufacturer of cars. By 1913 however, Henry Ford had developed an assembly plant in Highland Park, Michigan that included a conveyor belt which drastically reduced production times; a Model T took 93 minutes to build from start to finish, and as a result his company became the world’s largest manufacturer. During the late 20th century cars became widely affordable and the most convenient way to travel. Teenagers and their parents tend to have different objectives and priorities when it comes to cars, although it’s often not difficult for the two parties to come to a mutually agreeable decision, especially when each party is willing to compromise a little. Most teenagers place considerable importance on a car’s style (sporty), appearance (cool), performance (fast), size (room for friends), and accessories (customization).
The first issue that most young drivers and their parents usually struggle with when deciding on a first car is that of cost, which typically leads to the issue of used-versus-new.
An older car is certainly going to cost less than a brand new model. However, older used cars will generally be less reliable, may develop unexpected repair expenses, have fewer safety features, and not be as attractive as a newer model. On the other hand, insurance cost and taxes can be less.
Many teenagers prefer to buy an inexpensive older used car, such as the ever-popular Honda Car (Civic), and spend money to repair it and customize it to meet their needs. However, these added costs can easily get out of hand and exceed the price of a new car.
Just keep in mind that newer cars tend to have better safety equipment, better reliability, improved gas mileage, and, in some cases, lower insurance rates - because of better safety and reliability. Some older cars have high insurance rates because they are more often stolen (for parts) than new models. Honda Accords from the early 1990s are a good example.
Although most of the following recommendations are for smaller, less expensive vehicles, many teenagers prefer to drive larger vehicles such as SUVs and trucks. The 1941 Chevrolet Master DeLuxe and Special DeLuxe were a sensation from the day of their introduction, for a number of good reasons.
First, the 1941 Chevrolet Master DeLuxe and Special DeLuxe lineup was fabulously good looking, substantially bigger and more impressive than before. For the third time in as many years it was fully restyled by Harley Earl’s Art and Colour Section, and more than ever it resembled the costlier Buick.
Wheelbase of the 1941 Chevrolet Master DeLuxe and Special DeLuxe was stretched to 116 inches, which the ads carefully pointed out was the same as the 1929 Buick had been. Overall length was 1953/4 inches, an increase of 31/2 inches, and weight was up by a hundred pounds or so.
Interior space was substantially greater, providing three inches of additional hip room. Running boards were concealed and headlamps were blended into the fenders.
The engine of this Classic Deluxe Car was heavily revised. A redesigned cylinder head with a slightly higher (6.5:1) compression ratio raised horsepower to 90 from 85. (Early in the model year, Ford Motors, which since 1934 had claimed 85 horsepower for its V-8, decided upon further reflection that it really developed 90 horsepower, and revised its advertisements accordingly.)
New pistons were fitted, while valves, rocker arms, and water pump were all reworked. Influenced by the nation’s preoccupation with the war then raging in Europe, the revised 1941 Chevrolet Master DeLuxe and Special DeLuxe engine was called the “Victory Six.”
The United States had become, in President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s words, “the arsenal of democracy,” and Detroit, churning out the materials of war, was busier than at any time since the onset of the Depression a dozen years earlier.
In response to the inflationary pressures that were building as military production kicked in, prices of the Master DeLuxe and Special DeLuxe models were increased by anywhere from $29 to $61. The Master 85, meanwhile, had been phased out at the end of the 1940 season; henceforth all new Chevrolets were to be equipped with independent front suspension.
Times were good. Americans were back to work, and even with the higher prices, the 1941 Chevrolet Master DeLuxe and Special DeLuxe was widely perceived as a bargain, and model year sales posted a substantial gain.
