As with cars, buying a used RV or used travel trailer RV can be a great way to get the best bargain. Like cars, new RVs tend to devalue, although less dramatically, the second they are driven off the lot. Knowing this has led many a bargain hunter on the search for the perfect used travel trailer or RV.
But there’s a lot to be wary of with any used vehicle. This especially goes for travel trailers, fifth wheels and RVs. Besides needing to be road worthy recreational vehicles also need to be equipped to provide a comfortable residence. These double duty vehicles should be double checked by buyers, especially those in the second-hand market. There are several manufacturers like Four Winds RV, Forest River RV, Dutchmen RV, Flagstaff RV, Heartland RV, Gulf Stream RV, Everest, Holiday Rambler, Keystone Rv etc.
Here are some tips for picking out the right vehicle:
- Overall check: The initial walk-through is extremely important. Try to get a general feel of the living space on the inside and the vehicle on the outside. While taking in the general view also make an effort to notice the details. Follow-up on anything that seems amiss.
- Insurance: Before closing the deal make sure that you can get proper insurance for the vehicle. An independent insurance agent can steer you in the right direction on this decision; don’t leave it up to the word of the seller.
- Batteries: Find out where all the batteries are. Motor homes generally have two; travel trailers one but that’s not always the case. The vehicle’s batteries are important especially in a motor home. Make sure that the batteries are in good shape, can hold a full charge and, in the case of the motor home can start up the vehicle after long periods of being unused or cold.
- Brakes and Wheels: Thoroughly test the brakes on motor homes. Closely inspect the wheels and tires to make sure that they are in good shape, well-aligned and highway safe.
- Toilet: Make sure that the toilet is in working order and can hold water. You don’t want to get on the road and find your toilet is malfunctioning or letting in smell from the black water tank.
- Paperwork: What’s the history of this used RV for sale? It’s important to know. Make sure that you obtain and fully check all records of repairs, maintenance, inspection, etc. Also double check that the VIN from the paperwork matches that of the vehicle.
- Flooring: The flooring is sometimes damaged around sinks and toilets in RVs and travel trailers. Make sure to thoroughly check these areas for soft spots or rotting wood.
There are just a few things that one should look for in a used RV or travel trailer. Most importantly take your time. If you feel like the owner or salesperson is trying to push you into making a deal don’t. The seller is aware of the importance of this purchase and if he can’t give you the time and space to make it just move on.

Class A Motor Home
This type of RV is a motorized vehicle that looks similar to a tour bus or greyhound bus. Class A MHs do not typically sleep as many people as a class C MH. They also cost a bit more due to the enhanced suspension, wider chassis, overall amenities and generally better construction.
Class B Motor Home
A class B motor home is a vehicle that is actually built on a stock van chassis and body, but with a raised roof. These units are very small and manueverable - much like a standard van - but can hardly sleep more than two people comfortably. A class B+ vehicle is based upon the van chassis concept, but has a much wider body on it that makes it look less van-like and more like a class C motor home, but it’s not. The B+ motor home does not have a bed above the cockpit, like the class C; you will usually find an entertainment center and storage instead.
Class c Motor Home
This type of RV is a motorized vehicle that is similar to driving a large pickup truck, but with a wide body and a “cab over” space above the cockpit containing a large bed or entertainment center. A class C RV normally sleeps more people than a class A motor home.
Fifth Wheel
This type of RV is pulled behind a truck with a 5th wheel hitch installed in the bed of the pickup to be able to pull it. Another option for those with a gooseneck ball in the bed of their truck is to pull the FW using a gooseneck adaptor. FWs have a much taller ceiling height versus the typical travel trailer and they tend to pull easier since the weight is sitting right above the rear axle of the towing vehicle instead of on the bumper of the truck. The down side is you have a much taller trailer being pulled behind you.
Travel Trailer
This type of RV can be pulled behind a car, truck or SUV. This is pulled using either a ball, preferably using a 2″x2″ class III receiver hitch mounted to the vehicle’s frame. The class III hitch configuration is the best and most stable application versus a ball mounted on a bumper. A travel trailer has a lower ceiling height than a FW. I costs less and weighs less too. You’re not giving up anything in amenities just overall cost and headroom.

You are going to buy an RV for sale and you want the best deal possible. Whether it is a motor home, fifth wheel, or travel trailer, you know MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) is the baseline in establishing price and your goal is to pay 20% to 30% below MSRP.
If you are buying a used RV, you will be using NADA or Blue Book price guides and you should be aware these guides inflate their internet quotes approximately 10%. In addition, you are aware these prices are arbitrary and are to be used only as a guide.
You also know you’ll save money by securing your own financing rather than using dealer financing and you know it is in your best interests to be wary of any other “add one’s” the dealer may pitch you.
You are now in a position to secure a good deal on that motor home RV for sale, fifth wheel RV for sale, or travel trailer RV for sale except for one tiny matter. You really do not know that much about RV’s and even if you do very few recreational vehicle buyers know how to conduct a thorough inspection. In addition, take it from someone who works on them every day. You have no business taking delivery on any RV, new or used, unless you know exactly what you are getting.
Customers are buying RV’s knowing certain things are wrong and they think they will just live with it. It is not long before they tire of that. Let’s face it. There are numerous facets involved on these little “houses on wheels” and considering what they cost today it is only prudent consumers do their homework before they take their RV home.
The biggest trap RV buyers fall into when buying a new RV is placing too much emphasis on the manufacturer’s warranty. The manufacturers warranty is crucial but too many RV buyers take delivery on motor homes RV, fifth wheels RV, and travel trailers RV with problems that eventually “wear them down” as they continually drag their beloved RV back to the dealership to be repaired.
Anyone visiting an RV dealership or going to an RV sale should be aware of two things the RV Industry has mastered. The first is marketing their product and second is making it look good. Any RV owner knows appearance is only “wall panel and veneer deep” and there is more to inspecting an RV than pushing on cabinets and pounding on walls. If only it was that easy.

If you are giving serious thought to the purchase of a recreational vehicle for its leisurely value, you may be making a wise, but definitely expensive, choice in modes of travel.
An RV is a wonderful means of traveling the country with family and friends, but it can be very costly. So you before you pay hard-earned dollars for such an investment, you should first determine whether you can afford it, it’s ongoing maintenance costs, and how you will pay for it over time.
The purchase of a recreational vehicle should definitely not be done on a whim. It is a decision that should be made allowing due time for prudent consideration so you know exactly what you are getting into. That being said, though, because of the popularity of these “homes on wheels,” many recreational vehicles are within reach of people’s financial capabilities even if they are on budgets.
Before making a decision to finance one or buy one outright, you should consider taking one for a test drive or renting it for several days. That way you get a feel for available recreational vehicles to help decide which might suit your lifestyle.
Depending on your lifestyle, you may prefer an RV that can be towed behind your vehicle, or you can buy the motor home style. Most RV’s are very comfortable and made with larger families in mind, so chances are you will be very pleased with that aspect of your eventual selection.
If your budget will not permit a newer recreational vehicle, you can certainly buy one used. Many showrooms sell a line of pre-owned RV’s specifically made available for budget conscious consumers. If a used RV is on your radar, have it checked out thoroughly to ensure its longer term reliability, just as you would when considering a used car.
When your choice is a brand new model instead, you should also have it inspected from top to bottom. Just because it is new doesn’t mean there aren’t flaws. Verify that all warranties are in place and have considerable time remaining on them.
You may be financially capable of paying outright for your RV, but chances are you will need some sort of financing. You can either choose to work directly through your bank or obtain special financing through the RV dealer. Many RV companies have on-site lenders or special lenders available who deal strictly with recreational vehicles.
An RV is an excellent way to spend many lazy days with your family, but make sure you can afford it before leaping into such a significant purchase.

If you are a person who loves vacationing and long distance travel, then you would be the right type of person who would love to have a recreational vehicle, since this would provide you with the basic comforts and amenities required for you to live on wheels. A well-maintained RV is actually as good as a second home; with the advantage that you can take it anywhere you like to go.
The RV is usually designed to become a second home for people who travel for indefinite periods, in hostile habitats, and/or rural places where accommodations are not easy to find. This will provide all the regular amenities of a home, such as gas stove, bed, bath, toilet, kitchen, fridge, DVD, music system and so on.
Depending on the budget and the Recreational Vehicles also come equipped with their own pedal power generation system, water harvesting system, radio communication, dish antenna and TV, computer with internet and other such amenities that can enable your independent function despite the local provisions.
When you decide to go for the purchase of a RV it would be good if you run a perfunctory glance at the recreational vehicle supply available in the market. Besides the different types of self-contained motor homes there are three different options.
First, the travel trailer RV is a type of RV that is usually bigger and heavier than all the other RVs. It is usually pulled along with the help of a special hitch connection with the car/ truck you are driving.
Second, the truck camper RV is attached to the body of the car by means of a cradle; but it is smaller and becomes part of the body of the car/ truck
Finally, there is the fifth wheel travel trailer. As the name suggests, this type of RV is suspended over a fifth set of wheels while the front is attached to the main vehicle.
The type of recreational vehicle supply available in the market of a certain region is very dependent and limited to the demand of that region. The choice of recreational vehicle supply also depends upon the regions natural habitat. When the natural habitat is friendly and invites tourists, people tend to come and plan for longer stays, time during which some people decide to buy an RV. This too, in whatever small measure it may be, influences the recreational vehicle supply of the area.

Vacations are on its way and you along with your family are planning to go camping in an RV. The time is running out and you are not yet sure of the RV model you should buy. Of the various available models of recreational vehicles, you are unable to select the one that is best for you. All you need to do is to prepare a basic list of what you and your family members need during a camping trip and match it with the categories of motorized recreational vehicles.
Consider the number of people who will accompany you. Take into account your needs as well as the requirements of your family when you are away from the home. The total number of days to be spent, your lifestyle, likes and dislikes of your family and other such things should be considered as well. Other factors like the amount of kitchen space required, living space, beds, toilets, water storage facilities etc. should be taken into account.
Now once you are through with the above, you get an idea of what you exactly need. Motorized recreational vehicles are of three types: class A motor homes, class B motor homes and class c motor homes.
Class A motorhomes are the high end ones. They are more than thirty feet long and weight around 20000 pounds or more. The kind of comfort it offers is of highest degree. Most utilities are automated and needs just a push of a button to beget it operated. Household facilities like kitchen, toilets, living space, and bedrooms spacious as well as comfortable. However the gas supplies and water storage facilities should be checked to see if they are abundant for you. So if you are the one who is looking to compromise money for comfort, this could be just the best recreational vehicle for you.
The ones who do not want to shell out too much money can consider buying a Class B motorhome. If you have a small family then this could be the perfect one for you. These RVs are typically more than 21 feet long and weight around 10000 pounds. The amenities provided are similar, however their capacity and space is less than a Class A motorhome.
Class C motorhomes are by far the most economical ones. So if you have a small family and budget is a constraint then a class c motorhome is the one for you. The size is small; it weights less and is easier to drive.

As the baby boomers retire, the recreational vehicle industry has seen an upsurge in sales. For many people, nothing measures up to the independence and flexibility of enjoying the open road in a recreational vehicle (RV). There is certainly much to be said for taking your hotel with you wherever you go, and the savings on hotel costs can more than pay for the initial cost of an RV.
RV travelers realize the cost savings of this type of travel. There are no hotel rooms to book and dining in your RV can save an enormous amount of money compared to eating in restaurants every day. Owning a fifth wheel RV or travel trailer, whereas you can unhook your RV from your truck, saves you from having to book a rental car. For those in motor homes, many travelers will tow a vehicle behind them.
When considering the purchase of an recreational vehicle, you will be faced with three choices; a fifth wheel which is pulled by a pick up truck and attaches to a wheel inside the truck box, a travel trailer which is usually pulled by a truck with a rear hitch, or a motor home. All three types of RV’s have their pros and cons and each point will need to be considered based upon your needs and your budget. Other consideration for the RV lifestyle is the price of gas. However, it is still more economical than staying in hotels and eating at restaurants every night.
Traveling in a recreational vehicle or motor home is often a good choice for those who want to travel to different locations; however, it may be less suited to those who visit the same location year after year. Travelers who visit the same location every year may find it more economical to buy a vacation home. Buying a vacation home, and renting it out when it is not being used, can be a good way to both save money on lodging and build equity for the future.
Many RV travelers come to love the freedom of the open road and the easy care lifestyle. Traveling cross-country and stopping a various parks along the way is a wonderful adventure. The traveler can choose to stay a day or as long as they want at a particular location.
