Tractor-trailer hits prison van on I-26
A tractor-trailer heading from Charleston struck a prison van carrying six inmates Thursday on Interstate 26, seriously injuring one of the prisoners.Both vehicles were traveling west on I-26 near mile marker 44 when the 18-wheeler tipped over on top of the van, according to the state Highway Patrol.
The tractor-trailer slid into a ravine, and the van came to rest on its side off the shoulder of the road.
The inmates and the van driver were taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center by ambulance, Corrections Department spokesman Josh Gelinas said.
One inmate remained hospitalized late Thursday afternoon, Gelinas said.
The Tractor-trailer driver also was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for cuts, bruises and a broken finger, authorities said.
